The village shop is run entirely by volunteers, ‘By the community for the community’, and celebrated 20 years of business in June 2018 taking the opportunity for a total refit and upgrade!
‘If there is a particular item or request that you have, ask anyone at the counter and we will do our best to order and stock it’.
Maintaining our normal opening hours is not an easy job and we are always on the lookout for new volunteers.
We are delighted to welcome new members to the team, in particular young people keen to make a positive impact in the community as well as new residents who find working in the shop is an excellent way of getting to know people and establish links in the village.
Should you wish to join our friendly team of volunteers do please ask anyone working in the shop. Your help would be really welcome. There are other jobs if you do not want to serve behind the counter. Serving in the shop is an excellent way to meet new people and feel part of the community that is Tytherington Village.
You can also join the shop association which gives you voting rights at the Annual Members Meeting (AMM). We are always interested in your ideas!
Services We Offer Include
Newspaper Accounts
There is a seven days-a-week daily newspaper service staffed by a dedicated team from 7:00 till 8:30 am six days-a-week and an hour later on Sundays. We are happy to operate a newspaper account service en
suring your favourite newspaper or magazine is always available to you.
Hobbs House Bakery, Monday/Friday
Hobbs Bakery provides us with bread and rolls twice a week. Speciality breads, croissant and pastries may also be ordered in. Orders need to be given before 9am Wednesday for a Friday delivery and 9am Friday for Monday delivery.
Patsy’s Cakes, Wednesday Mornings.
We have a standing order from Patsy’s cakes, though orders can be taken to guarantee your cake requirements. She can also provide Easter biscuits and a small selection of tray bakes. These must be ordered before Monday 9am.
Frocester Fayre, Meat Products.
Meat, Bacon, Ham, Cheese, frozen ready meals and pasties are available from Thursday afternoon. Again, items can be ordered and put aside for you. Please order by Tuesday 5pm for a Thursday collection.
Ferrantes, Bacon and Cheese
Bacon, and cheddar cheese are regularly ordered from Ferrantes. Their delivery also comes in on a Thursday afternoon. Again, please order by Tuesday 5pm.
Milk: SMS Monday -Friday
Milk is delivered daily, should you have a particular request e.g. skimmed milk or other dairy items such as yoghurt or cream please let us know. You will need to ask by 9am to ensure next day delivery but mor
e notice would be welcome.
Fentons Farm Eggs
We welcomed Fentons Eggs, a firm located on the Devon/Somerset border, as our egg supplier in 2025. The delicious eggs, from free range hens, are extremely popular with our customers and are delivered each Tuesday afternoon.
Tytherington Post Office
The Post Office is run as a completely separate service within the village shop. Paid staff ensure that this outreach office is run in compliance with Post Office regulations. The Postmaster is Mr Philip Coward.

The Shop and Post Office Background
The establishment of Tytherington Village Shop and Post Office is a testament to the depth of feeling and community spirit that existed within the village in the 1990s. In July 1996 a village shop action group was set up following the closure of the privately-owned shop. The action group’s hard work and the support of local residents led to the formation of Tytherington Village Shop Association (TVSA) and its formal registration under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts.
Much of the finance was raised not only by fundraising events but also by membership subscriptions and bonds from local residents’ keen to fill the gap left by the closure of the previous village shop and post office. Financial support and materials were also received from the local quarry (ARC now Hanson).
The shop opened in a purpose-built facility in 1998 on the site of the old village hall and gradually built up a flourishing business, combining a shop and Post Office. However, in 2008 Post Office Lim
ited announced a large number of small branch closures and unfortunately Tytherington was one of these.
After a vigorous campaign by residents, with the support of the then local MP Steve Webb, our own Parish Council and South Gloucestershire Council, the village post office reopened in 2009. After a concerted effort applying for grants and fund raising, finance was in place to extend the shop providing a combined storage area and kitchen for take away drinks and snacks.
A Lottery grant was awarded in 2018 which enabled an internal refit and upgrade, including a ‘My Thornbury visual display’ to provide residents with up-to-date information regarding local events.
The Parish Council and Cotswold Homes also contributed funds towards an upgraded CCTV system and a new till.
In 2024 a new 25-year Lease was agreed with our landlord, the Tytherington Parochial Church Council, to safeguard the future of the shop.
Also in 2024 Tytherington Village Shop successfully applied for a further Lottery grant to help fund the installation of Solar Panels. The work was completed successfully in July 2024. The financial saving in ongoing electricity costs will help ensure the shop can continue to serve residents for many years to come.
In late 2024 The Post office was again at risk as Post Office Limited advised the Postmaster of the intention to close in early 2025. But after strong representations by Postmaster Philip Coward, a vigorous campaign by the shop’s customers and the involvement of MP Claire Young the Post office was saved.
On hearing the good news MP Claire Young said.
“I am delighted that the Tytherington Post Office will be reopening.”
“This is great news and the result of a strong campaign by local Postmaster Philip and others to save their beloved post office.
“I am glad to have played my part and will continue to support the team at Tytherington Community Shop.”
A spokesperson from the Parish Council said:
“Great collaboration between our MP Claire Young, Ward Councillors, Parish Council and all the residents of Tytherington and Itchington who signed the petition and sent in letters of support.”
After closing for a few days the Post Office reopened in March 2025 on a permanent basis. After reopening the Post Office is proving even more popular than ever.
The majority of villagers who are members of TVSA own the shop and as shareholders have a say at the Annual Members Meeting in how it is run.
Thanks to the hard-working volunteers the shop and post office continue to thrive.
